Description

Head

The AmScope 40X-2500X LED Digital Binocular Compound Microscope comes with a professional Siedentopf head, which has a big advantage over the sliding head in that it the interpupillary distance can be easily adjusted without any changes to the focus. This a big advantage particularly in teaching demonstrations given that all students can observe the specimen while adjusting the interpupillary distance (53mm - 77mm) to their individual specifications without affecting focus. As such, all students would get to observe a clear image of the specimen without the need to re-focus. Being a binocular microscope, the camera is attached on one of the oculars, which can then be connected to a PC. However, when not connected to a PC, it can easily be removed and used as an ordinary binocular microscope. The adjustable ocular diopter accommodate for differences in vision between different users, which means that virtually everyone can use the microscope.

Digital Camera

The Amscope 40X-2500X LED Digital Binocular Compound Microscope comes with a 5MP USB camera. The camera can be easily attached and detached depending on whether the user wants to use it or not. With the 640x480 pixel USB camera in place, the user can easily capture still images and videos. When connected to a PC, this feature also allows users to view a live stream, which is a great advantage particularly for teaching demonstrations or sharing the image under observation. The microscope also comes with an easy to install software that provides image-development and measurement tools and advanced compositing features such as image stitching and extended-depth-of-focus. The software allows for such functions as editing, processing and measuring, which most users would find very useful when viewing different types of specimen. On the other hand, with the independent preview and capture resolutions, users will get an opportunity to view high-speed video and capture high definition images. On Mac computers, the camera can also be used as a driverless imaging device. This is compatible with such applications as ProScope and Photo Booth.

Optics

With regards to the optics, the AmScope LED Digital Binocular Compound Microscope comes with two pairs of widefield eyepieces (WF10X and WF25X) and four Achromatic objectives (DIN 4X, 10X, 40X(S), 100X(S, Oil)) that allow for six magnification settings of 40X, 100X, 250X, 400X, 1000X & 2500X. "DIN" is an international standard for microscope objective lenses. In case the objective lenses are lost or damaged, this means that they can be replaced with lenses from a majority of microscopes in the market. Therefore, the fact that these objectives are labeled as "DIN" means that they can be easily replaced when need be. For the 40x and 100x objectives, a spring feature has been included to protect the lenses from damage when they come in contact with the specimen or slide. This feature allows the lenses to retract when they come in touch with a hard surface, therefore preventing damage. The objectives are also achromatic, which means that the center 60 percent of the field of view will appear as flat and focused without optical distortions common in defective lenses.

*note, the spring feature is commonly present in the 40x and 100x objectives given that they are more likely to come in contact with the slide during observation than the low power objectives

Illumination

This Amscope microscope uses a powerful single bulb illumination, which has an advantage over other light sources in that it has a long life span, it is low energy and produces less heat. As such, it does not pose the danger of overheating the specimen. This is particularly beneficial when observing water samples that may contain live organisms in that they are not overheated. Light intensity can also be adjusted depending on the type of specimen thereby enhancing the viewing experience.

Some of the other specifications include:

  • Coaxial coarse & fine knobs on both sides
  • A 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz, AC/DC adapter (UL approved) power supply
  • Abbe condenser, iris diaphragm and color filter

For its price range, the Amscope 40X-2500X LED Digital Binocular compound Microscope is a great professional microscope that can not only be used by professionals, but also by microscope enthusiasts at home. The 5MP camera produces great, high quality pictures making it easy to identify all parts of the specimen for analysis purposes. The camera system is also very easy to use, and most users will appreciate the fact that it increases the functionality of the microscope. The only problem that some users may have with the microscope is that the software is apparently only meant for windows. Other than that, it is an excellent product,
