Description

Microscope Head

The Omax 5MP Digital 40X-2500X Advanced Oil NA1.25 Dark field microscope is a trinocular microscope, which means that it comes with a trinocular head. As such, it provides accommodation for a camera without the need to remove either of the eyepieces.

Having a trinocular head presents a great benefit in that it allows users the freedom to either view the specimen through the eyepieces or through a monitor thereby making it possible to double check or confirm the investigation. Secondly, a trinocular head allows for sharing.

When more than one person is viewing the specimen, the trinocular head allows more people to view the specimen on the monitor screen at the same time. It also comes with a sliding binocular head, which is easily adjusted by sliding the binocular pair outwards or closer together. The microscope can therefore be comfortably used by anyone regardless of their interpupillary distance (2-3/16inch ~ 2-15/16inch (55mm ~ 75mm)).

The viewing head is also inclined at a 45 degree angle and can be turned around 360 degrees. These features are aimed at enhancing comfort and convenience. With a 45 degrees inclination of the binocular head, the microscope can be used comfortably while seating without causing strained or cramped muscles.

The 360 degrees swiveling allows the microscope head to be easily turned around to the direction or the user without having to move the entire microscope. Therefore, in the event that two users are sitting opposite to each other, they can view the specimen by simply turning the microscope head to their direction without moving the entire microscope.

Comfort and enhanced convenience is helped by the presence of diopters in both eyepieces. These are important features of the eyepiece that allow people with different eye visions to use the microscope without any problems. Depending on the user's eye vision, the diopter can be easily adjusted to the ideal position to get a clear view of the specimen.

The microscope also comes with wide field WF10X/18 and WF25X eyepieces that can be interchanged depending on the needs of the user (wide field eyepieces allow for a wider field of view).

* WF25X provides 25X magnification while WF10x gives 10X magnification with a field of view of 18mm. When combined with different objectives, they offer different levels of magnification. They are thus interchanged depending on the needs of the user.

Objectives

The OMAX 5MP Digital 40X-2500X Advanced Oil NA1.25 Dark field Trinocular Compound LED Microscope comes with a set of 4X, 10X, 40X (S), 100X (S, Oil) achromatic DIN objectives. When combined with either eyepiece, the objectives provide six levels of magnification (40X-100X-250X-400X-1000X-2500X).

Having an achromatic (achromat) lens for the objectives provides a significant advantage given that they eliminate problematic chromatic aberrations, which in turn makes them the most cost efficient lenses for good polychromatic illumination and imaging.

Compared to other simpler lenses, using achromatic lenses ensures consistently smaller spot sizes as well as high quality, superior images without decreasing clear aperture.

The objectives are also labeled DIN, which means that they are DIN standard (they provide 160mm distance from objective flange to the flange of the eyepiece). This means that the microscope uses standard objectives that can be easily obtained and interchanged in the event of damage. These objectives can also be exchanged with JIS standard objectives that provide similar optical performance, equal quality as well as the same RMS mounting thread (0.7965" x 36TPI).

* Using standardized lenses makes it easier to interchange objectives in case of damage. This is because standardized lenses are readily available for the microscope when need be.

Dark field / Bright Field Microscopy

As mentioned, the OMAX 5MP Digital 40X-2500X Dark field Trinocular is a versatile device that allows the user the freedom to view a variety of specimen using two microscope methods (dark field and bright field).

The bright-field system comes with an NA1.25 Abbe condenser with iris diaphragm and filter holder and is considered to be the most basic microscopy method. Here, light from the source under the stage is gathered in the condenser, shaped into a cone and focused on the specimen plane.

Although bright-field microscopy is simple, it is an important technique that is used in such fields as bacteriology and various other life sciences. For this technique, users often see a dark specimen with a bright background.

The dark-field system on the other hand comes with an NA 1.36-1.25 condenser. The condenser used for this technique serves to form a hollow cone of light with light travelling around the objective.

With this technique, users observe specimens with a dark background compared to bright-field where the background is bright. However, the specimen appears brightly lit thereby providing a big contrast with the background allowing for a clear view of the specimen.

Dark-field microscopy is also useful for laboratory purposes making it important in microbiology, bacteriology and other research purposes. Unlike bright-field microscopy, dark-field microscopy is ideal for viewing unstained specimen that absorb little light ideal for viewing the external features of such specimen as algae, yeast, hair and planktons among many others.

Some of the other features of the OMAX 5MP Digital 40X-2500X  include:

  • Power supply: 100V~240V 50/60Hz worldwide range
  • Rack and pinion adjustment
  • Black palm rest on the base
  • A mechanical stain-resistant double layer
  • Coaxial coarse and fine focus knobs on both sides
  • Tension control
  • Photo tube adjustment range: 5/8inch (15mm)

In addition to a double layer mechanical stage that can be easily moved back and forth and sideways using the knobs, the microscope comes with coaxial coarse and fine focus knobs on both sides used for focusing.  This has been shown to be particularly important features for both right handed and left handed individuals.

By having the coaxial coarse and fine focus knobs on both sides, users can easily focus the specimen without difficulties presented by being either left or right handed. One of the biggest challenges of having the knobs on one side is that right-handed/left-handed individuals may have difficulties focusing (moving the stage) which may result in moving the stage up too fast and damaging the slide or the objective lens.

5MP Digital Camera

The OMAX 5MP Digital 40X-2500X Advanced Oil NA1.25 Dark field Trinocular Compound LED Microscope comes with a 5MP digital camera with a 0.5X reduction lens for a wider field of view. With regards to frame speed, the camera allows for 5fps at 2592x1944, 18fps at 1280x960, 60fps at 640x480. This allows the user an option with regards to dimensions.

The camera also comes with software that is compatible with all computers using Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10, Mac OS and Linux operating system. This means that the camera can be used with virtually all types of computers (PC) given that it is not limited to a few operating systems (OS). Once installed, the software allows the user to not only capture images and record videos, but also make measurements of the lengths, angles, areas and edit the image.

With this system, the user also has the freedom to capture images and record videos that can be saved on the PC or shared with others.

Pros

The OMAX 5MP Digital 40X-2500X is a versatile device, which is one of its biggest strengths. By having in place both the dark-field and bright-field systems, users can use the microscope to view a range of specimen depending on their needs.

Some of the other strengths of the microscope include:

  • All lenses are made up of high quality optical glass
  • High resolution images (crystal clear images)
  • Ease of use
  • Six level of magnification with high magnification option (up to 2500X)

Cons

  • Some users may feel the need to get a better camera
  • The microscope uses a sliding binocular head. Although it is easy to use, adjustments may affect focus, which means that users have to adjust focus every time they adjust the interpupillary distance
